Dry Tortugas

Dry Tortugas National Park.....located 70 miles west of Key West, we took a tour boat on 7/15/10 for a day tour. 2 and a half hour ride one way. There's Fort Jefferson which occupied the biggest island - Garden Key - which constructed in 1846 and used as a prison too.

Dr. Samuel Mudd was convicted of conspiracy in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and sent to Fort Jefferson Prison in 1865. If you are interested in the history, go to

I am just thinking, that....if you are in prison cell and you have the view from it's window as beautiful as Dry Tortugas, and the Bush Key(above) with birds flying around - a paradise! - ......it makes things more difficult or easier...comforting... to stay inside...???

Dr. Muddは、リンカーン大統領を暗殺した男の折れた足を治療したことで、共謀の疑いを受け、Dry Tortugasが牢獄として使われていた当時、１８６５年にここに送られてきました。１８６７年に黄熱病がDry Tortugasを襲い、任務についていた医者が亡くなり、Dr. Muddが後任として目覚しい働きを見せ多くの命を救った事実から、恩赦を受けて、４年の投獄生活後に釈放されたそうです。

牢獄の窓から見える景色がこれほど美しく、鳥たちは自由に飛びまわるパラダイスだったら、囚われの身としてはより一層つらいものか、それともなぐさめられるものか、考えてしまいます。
